Ezra 8:22
I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him."
Matthew B.
Matthew B. from Katy, TX said:
God looks after everyone that looks to him! If we forsake him he will be angry against us. In verse 31 "On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way." We see that God did in fact look after and protected them from their enemies. I see God's love in this passage.

God is with all who accept him into their hearts and live as he has taught us. Will we see hard times and sorrow? Absolutely we will, we live in a fallen world. It with God in us and with us, who can be against us?

And vs 23 says So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer. Good move to fast and seek God for traveling mercies. These people were carrying todays equivalent of millions of dollars worth of stuff back to Jerusalem...it was a very long journey and without God's divine provision and protection they were prey to all kinda robbers and murderers and thiefs, oh my. And yes, I guess it woulda seemed double minded to ask for help after telling how mighty and all protective their God was. I also noticed, tho, that Ezra weighed everything out before and after the journey as a check and balance among the carriers of the valuables. Didn't want anyone to be tempted like Aichan, back in the battle of Ai. Ezra was a very wise man...it showed his lineage going all the way back as a direct descent of Aaron.

Point well made, Donna. I commented on v.23 and believe that because they fasted and petitioned God for their protection that they so received it. Fasting and prayer is a sacrifice lagely forgotten in the church of today, though I know many do so.
