Genesis 23:16
Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.

I expect that Abraham desired to pay the price for the land, rather than take it as a gift so that there would be no way the Hittites could claim it back at a later time, since he had paid for and it was deeded to Abraham. purely my thoughts. God bless all.

Abraham wanted to pay for the land and cave to burying Sarah I think so that no one would feel he owed them something.

That even in this time of great sadness, Abraham still obey god and never allowed anything to be given to him but paid for the piece of land.

Abraham was very careful do not let himself get into a situation with the property so he needed to pay for the property to not have any trouble

It seems that Abraham desired to pay for the burial place so there would be no chance of the Hittites coming back on him later claiming the land was theirs. In this case it was a contract and Abraham openly paid for the property so there could never be any dispute. Just my thoughts, because he was more than once offered the land for free. Lloyd, I think you're right. Reading the passages about his transaction made me think of the NT verse about being shrewd as the serpent but as innocent as a dove (something like that). I also wonder if it was a way to get a foothold in the land he knew would eventually be part of his heirloom to the promise nation. Interesting, and just my thoughts as well.
