Because there is so much to distract us--false prophets, materialism, the media, etc. believers must continually build ourselves up in the faith; we must continually do as David did, and encourage ourselves in our faith. We must hold fast to our own faith, not just for our own salvation, but so that we can reach out to others, as Jude directs in verses 22, and 23, ready and willing to share our faith and showing mercy to them.
