Leviticus 24:14
"Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.

This punishment for blasphemy (cursing God) seems extreme by modern standards. But it shows how seriously God expects us to take our reationship with him. Often we use his name in swearing, or we act as though he doesn't exist. We should be careful how we speak and act, treating God with reverence. Eventually, he will have the last word.

It may seem harsh but God is protecting the lineage and purity of the Israelites. All of this is done so the Messiah can fulfill the prophecies stated about Him.

I am glad that we are not under the Old Testament law about a blasphemer being stoned to death. Otherwise, I would have have part of the people who will stone a blasphemer to his death even if he is my friend. Today when I hear someone blaspheme the name of the Lord, I just pray that the Lord forgives him and for him to realize that he is committing a big transgression against the Lord.

God is holy and misuse of his name is a serious offense. Death! Even though we are not punished in this manner today, we must be very careful how we use the name of God in our conversations for He is Holy!
