The traditions for forgiveness of sin relied on placing the dead body in a stone box and when all that was left were bones, it was then reburied with the rest of the deceased family members. The idea that all that was left were bones meant the sins were forgiven. Jesus was being very truthful direct by stating that this tradition was dead as those who died in sin without trusting in Him for forgiveness. Ephesians 2:8 and John 3:16 says it all.
