He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

The encouraging of sound doctrine can only be done when the one holding the trustworthy message of the Gospel can detect false teaching. That requires knowing what the pages of the Bible really teach. Those who look to have their ears "tickeled" need someone to open God's Word to them one on one so they can see and hear what is true verses the untruth. As one encourages others he himself/herself is made stronger in the defense of the Gospel.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

It just seems that so many really do not care and go on with life without thinking and latch on to so many false teachings, false religions. I ask God that their ears would instead hear the Word of God though the spoken Word of a believer and then check out the Gospel message for themselves. And the Gospel of John is a great place to start.
