2 Samuel 10:3
the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn't David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out and overthrow it?"

Oh, what terrible things can happen when we think the worst of someone. Being a peacemaker means always trying to give people the benefit of the doubt.

When I read the verse, I see the great man and king David is, he is not only showing gratitude but also sympathy. However, Hanun allowed his advisors to questions David's intentions. It made me wonder how many times I allowed a third party to sway my decisions, thoughts, and persona of a person I know quite well. Instead of asking, I jumped to a conclusion out of intimidation and fear, which soon leads to discord and confusion. A war breaks out because of reasonable doubt. He never talked to the men, he just went on an advisor who was acting in fear and not love.

The commanders had mean dishonest thoughts in their minds so assumed so did David. They were mean and evil to others so thought everyone would be like them. David just wanted to show a kindness to Hanun an his father had shown to him. Not every one who repays a kindness with a kindness has ulterior motives.

The Ammonites were most unwise to not further investigate David's envoy of peace and honor, before just assuming what their mission was to investigate. Sometimes we jump to our own conclusions without seeking out the truth. Lord, help me to seek out Your truths before jumping to my own conclusions, as the Ammonites did. Amen

The Ammonite commanders misjudged David's noble attempt to honor the death of the Ammonite king and in the end a war broke out leaving over forty thousand dead. Normally when you and I misjudge others, people don't die but relationships can be hurt or even destroyed. We need to be very careful judging someone else's motives because only God can truly know another's heart.

So true, Terry. It's so easy to jump to a decision before we investigate the whole truth. God bless.

It's awful when good intentions are being treated as if with malice motives. David only wanted to show kindness to Hanun but they thought he spying on their land to invade them. They even humiliated his messengers. God sent His son to save the world but the teachers of the law and the pharisees treated His son with contempt. They thought of Jesus as trying to get honor and glory for himself. They mistreated and humiliated him and even crucified him on the cross. Do not weigh using a bad scale, and do not judge using evil thoughts. Why not rather be wronged? why not rather be cheated? instead of doing so yourselves and sin against the Spirit of Grace.

As David attempted to honor Hanun's father, some of the commanders dreamed up a false rumor and humiliated David's honoring team. Very similar to the false rumors that are started today but this one cost the lives of at least 40,700 men. Seems to me Hanun should have checked for himself and made his own decision. Can you imagine the devastation to the families of those men....

This was bad advice from his commanders. This is what happens when leaders don't have God's wisdom or godly men advising them. I hope this Syria thing works out and the decision made is based on wisdom from God (not man).

For sure on the Syrian conflict, Allan. It's a civil war and could become much more if other countries get involved, and it surely looks like America has decided to get involved. My fear is for Israel in the first place. I pray God will give His wisdom.
