How can this be explained giving up his daughters? The only explanation is that he made a poor choice and no one is perfect, even the righteous before God can do things that are wrong, as the case at the end of this chapter when his own daughters became pregnant by him. It seems very odd and extreme but some people comment that it was a different time from now yet even then there had to be a sense that it was wrong or his daughters would not have found it necessary to get him drunk first.
