Genesis 35:10
God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel. " So he named him Israel.

Jacob had returned to his first love, (Rev.2:4-5) saw the error of his ways and got rid of idols and built and altar and worshiped God... so God blessed him by changing his name...We who are in Christ will have a new name, as well..(Rev. 2:17)... what a glorious day that will be!!

The name usually reflects the state of the person. Israel as a nation have always struggled with their faith in God. But God's many names also reflects his true nature. For he is Emmanuel, God with us. He is the Prince of Peace, the Great Shepherd, Lion of Judah, and more.
