The sin offering was for those who 1) commited a sin without realizing it or 2) committed a sin out of weakness or negligence as opposed to outright rebellion against God. Different animals were sacrrificed for the different kinds of siin. The death of Jesus Christ was the final sin offering in the Bible (Hebrews 9:25-28 tells us why).

It's interesting, that the whole community can sin, a leader can sin, a member can sin, and they only are affected, but an anointed priest sin affects the people served. Wow! We often think our mistakes, our failures...our sin is personal and just between us individually and God. What struck me about this verse is that it said if the spiritual leader sins, guilt is also brought upon the people that leader serves. Now I know this is before the work of our Lord Jesus Christ was completed. But considering the principle here, when those of us whom others look to for spiritual guidance fail in our walk with God, it opens the door for others to falter in their walk. And as we pray asking forgiveness, we must cover others in prayer also, asking for any offenses that we have caused them to also be forgiven.

Sin, even if unintentional has consequences. We usually are punished or make amends when we sin. However, since the sin is unintentional, the punishment seemed to be economic in nature as a bull without defest must cost more than one without defect. One way I can make amends or restitution for the sins which I commit unintentionally is to give alms to the poor especially in this season of Lent.
