John was the fore runner for Jesus, spoken of many times in the Bible. Baptism in water is a symbolic act even to today.... what really matters is Jesus baptizing us with the Holy Spirit and with his fire and passion for each of us.. His two great commandments... Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, mind, spirit and power, and love one another as I have loved you.... He baptizes us with fire to share the gospel and there is no better way that to share it with the Gospel of John

John was setting the stage for Jesus. John did not want to be followed. He was teaching and leading others to the Lord. He was simply saying, I am like one of you. I am not worthy. One day there will be one more powerful, one that will give you eternal life.

As soon as a sinner is repentive, sincere, and submissive, then only can you receive his mercy, forgiveness, and the peace that only he can give. I have received and been renewed and would not ever change that. It is the best blessing anyone can receive.

It means that Jesus allows us to do works in his name through the Holy Spirit. We are bapized by water for our repentance but Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and fire that lives within us to allow us to do his work even when we feel unworthy of him.
