Joseph was just a man. Many people today-- of all genders-- do not have self-control.This verse tells us that God chose a man who was self-controlled as the earthly father of the Messiah. Today we would call Joseph a step-father. How many step-fathers today have the compassion and self-control of Joseph. Joseph was likely not a man to hit children out of anger or loss of control. If you met the carpenter Joseph, what do you think his personality would be like?
