2 Samuel 17:23
When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father's tomb.

Knowing that the advice of Ahithophel had failed, and that Absalom chances of victory were slim, he was defeated. And before Ahithophel could be branded/executed as a a traitor he hung himself, as a foreshadowing of Judas who will betray Jesus and take his own life by hanging. As we saw in this chapter there were many faithful servants who risked their lives for king David.

Excellent insight Peter, and great foresight comparing Ahithophel to Judas, in Jesus time. Both hanged themselves in their guilt and embarrassment. Nasty weather here right now Peter, with freezing rain. Salt trucks are busy on the roads tonight. God bless and protect you and yours. :-)

Like Judas, Ahithophel hung himself when his plan did not succeed.

Ahithophel's advice was referred to in 2 Sa 16:23 as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God: to both David and Absalom. This is probably the 1st time anyone ever rejected his advice. He figured his ministry, thus his life was over. I see an old testament picture of Judas. He deceived his master and now he realizes that bcuz he was out of a job with Absalom, he certainly couldn't go back with David. Certainly, he figured, David would never forgive him and would probably have him killed anyway. So he just decided to trust in his own understanding and take care of the matter himself.

Good insight Donna. I see it the same way.
