Genesis 38:26
Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.

The sin in our life as a child of God will be exposed by the Father who loves us to much to permit us to hide our sin.

She didnt want to be given the last child that was so young and wanted Judah to be free of the burden and since she finally bore a son she was free and this is interesting indeed

Judah was afraid his last son would die like the first two had. He didn't know God hated what they did and killed them. When he refused to give the last son to her, Tamar moved things along and protected herself by thinking things through so Judah would not kill her. A wise, gutsy lady in difficult times. God loves gutsy ladies.

Have you seen the movie "Loving Leah". It deals with the modern Jew's issue of a wife who loses her husband without bearing a child to him. I was surprised that modern Jewry still addresses this problem. The brother either renounces his dead brother or marries his dead brother's wife now. But that is among the ultraorthodox only, I think. Most Jews bury the dead and let the widow marry who she wishes. What was done in the old testament isn't necessarily practiced today.

Two things come to mind as I read Chapter 38 of Genesis. 1.) Promises must be kept always. Judah had promised Tamar that she would be given as a wife to his third son, however this promise was not kept. The Bible does not give us a reason as to why the promise was not kept, but I can only guess that Judah was grief stricken with the loss of two children and his wife. Tamar knowing that she needed a child to hae any value in society did what needed to be done. 2.) I love how the Bible does not deny the wrongdoings of the people. Judah laid with whom he believed to be a prostitute, yet the Bible does not judge him for it. It seems matter of factly that a man will reach out to a man to satisfy the most basic need: sex. It also shows to me that in that culture women were not valued. Interesting reading today! Praise God for His word.

Reach out to a MAN! I think you mean a woman. I can think of some very valued ladies in the Old Testament - like Deborah, the Judge! I believe that God has always loved and esteemed women. It just took until the New Testament for Jesus to show it. From beginning to end, women have had a part in God's plans. The hand that rocks the cradle...moves the world! Look at that 13 year old girl who started all this. God is still using her dedication to changed the world. PTL
