Numbers 20:12
But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them."

Peter B.
Peter B. from Buchanan, MI said:
Here we see the sin of disobedience that keeps Moses and Aaron from entering the Promise Land. They forfeited leadership because they did not believe and trust God, and rebelled against His command. And as Christians our anger is a dangerous emotion that needs Gods guidance, and as sometimes in my anger for things that I see and hear, I thank the Lord, let this anger pass, you are in control.

Well expressed Peter. Moses was commanded to speak to the rock rather than strike it, and his disobedience caused himself and Aaron the pass away before entering the promised land. This reminds me of our discussion at our Bible study tonight in Eph 6:10-13 regarding the armor of God and applying it, as in this case, where Moses allowed anger to trip him up, rather than doing as the Lord had commanded him to speak to the rock. Have stamina in the Lord, Peter, as we apply the armor He has provided us through Christ and Holy Spirit. :-)

This punishment seems harsh, but Moses was the leader the example by which others would follow. Leaders should be held to higher standards not perfect one but stricter. He did not do as God said and simply speak to the rock he lectured the people out of frustration and anger which did not correctly reflect the heart of God. He reduced God to that of an angry man. Moses also shows a lack of faith by striking the rock twice which he was only instructed to speak to it . He goes even further says to the people must WE bring you water out if this rock as if God could not do it with out him. Even the most faithful get frustrated and loose sight I pray that God helps me to see him in all that I do may I take a minute and not act out of anger and frustration.

Even Moses dishonored the Lord by striking the rock, rather than letting the Lord provide the water. After all Moses lead them through, he would not get to see the promised land and Aaron dies to before seeing the promised land.

Dear LORD, sometimes it takes so much faith to see your face in the midst of troubles. Sometimes we lose faith in YOU and let our problems become a giant, a snare, barrier that block us from YOU. Please give us more faith, more love, more power, and more of you in our lives LORD so that we will not fall away from YOU, our living water. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

The leaders (Moses) sinned by hitting the Rock twice, but God still blessed the people by giving them water.

Thank you Nancy. I did not know that because he struck the rock twice that God said you did not trust in me, I thought the LORD refers to the time when Moses doubted that He can feed the entire community for a month with meat in Numbers 11. Thanks for clearing it up for me. God bless you.

1 Corinthians 10:1-4 says the Rock was Christ. In Exodus 17 God told Moses to smite the Rock and out came Water. Christ was smitten once, never to be smitten again. Jesus died once for all. This time Moses was to speak to the Rock but he smote the Rock again. Moses misrepresented the nature and character of God by being angry. When Moses smote the Rock this time it gave the impression that Moses was providing for the people, when in fact, only God could provide for His people.

Wow what a chapter... 1 short line = Miriam died. It ends with Aaron dying with a 30 day mourning... But WOW God really means what He says! "Speak to the rock" ... Moses in his fit of understandable anger strikes it and it loses it's "type" The people still get their water but Moses gets to "see only" the Promised Land. Our God says what He means and means what He says!
