Numbers 30:2
When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.

Peter B.
Peter B. from Buchanan, MI said:
Difficult Chapter: Looking at this verse from a Christian stand point, breaking a vow can lead to consequences. By making a vow to the Lord or to one another, we are prone to errors of judgement by making vows foolishly. Making a foolish vow hinders our Relationship with the Lord.

Once again, as you said Peter, a difficult chapter but you expressed verse 2 very well. The chapter is basically about the authority of the man, second only to the authority of God but does not mean to abuse that authority. I've known some who have abused that authority over their women, thinking they were the boss and therefore demeaning their wives. Not a wise choice in regards to God. Blessings once again Peter, as we enter another Lord's day and another week has flown by. :-)

when a vow is made to God it is like making a vow with your soul. It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. Ecclesaiastes. 5:5

Moses reminded people that they must keep their promises to God and to others. That is just as true for us today. Some people make promises with no intention of keeping them. Others make promises without thinking through the consequences of keeping that promise. And then still others forget their promises over time. Here we are reminded that we need to be people of our word. Thankfully we can rest in the fact that God keeps every promise He makes and we need do do the same!

Be a person of integrity in all you do especially with God. When you make a vow to God most likely you were led to do so by the Holy Spirit so don't get sidetracked and not see it through. Do not make vows out of fear rather make them from faith. Fear can grab ahold of us and before we know it we are making foolish vows we know we can't keep.

Once I was watching an old Jimmy Stewart movie, I do not remember the name of it but had to do with the police and the local newspapers. The police asked the newspaper not to write a story for x amount of time. There was about 4 or 5 big shots with the police and 4 or 5 big shots with the newspaper. They made a verbal agreement with no signatures or official papers involved. Today we have to sign away our life for the simplest agreement which a good lawyer could easily make void for either party. Our word should be our word but unfortunately in today's world our word means so little. I am so glad that God is the same, yesterday, today and forever. His promises are yes and amen. Lord help me to be totally faithful in all i do and say.

Only make a promise on what you can keep or else it is better to not promise anything at all or else you will be guilty of sin.

Are there other examples of vows that we make besides marriage vows in our day and age and culture?
