Evangelism 101

What it Means to Share the Good News

Evangelism Definition

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news . . .” Isaiah 52:7a (ESV)

What is evangelism?

"Evangelism is not salesmanship. It is not urging people, pressing them, coercing them, overwhelming them, or subduing them. Evangelism is telling a message. Evangelism is reporting good news." – Richard C. Halverson

The word "evangelism" comes from the Greek word "euangelizomai", which literally means "to bring Good News." The Bible defines what Good News means in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (ESV):

"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures..."

Evangelism is sharing the Good News that Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection conquered sin. Sin separates us from a holy God. The Good News is that we can be reconnected to God and be assured of an eternity with Him in Heaven when we believe in Jesus Christ. This gift of a never-ending relationship with God is available to everyone...but not everyone has heard this Good News...which is why evangelism is so important!

“One thing I have observed in all my years of ministry is that the most effective and important aspects of evangelism usually take place on an individual, personal level. Most people do not come to Christ as an immediate response to a sermon they hear in a crowded setting. They come to Christ because of the influence of an individual.” - John MacArthur

Over the centuries, God has used men and women to share the Good News. Well-known evangelists like D.L. Moody, John Wesley, and Billy Graham made evangelism their life’s work.

Sometimes the crowds are large—like the ministry of Billy Graham. Other times, God gives evangelists an audience of one.

In 1893, Helen Cadbury understood how powerful sharing the Good News could be—so much so that she organized a group of ladies to sew pockets onto their dresses and carry copies of the New Testament in order to share the Good News. This was the beginning of The Pocket Testament League. Because of Helen’s vision for personal evangelism, Pocket Testament League members have shared 110 million pocket-sized Gospels.

Evangelism = Action

“Evangelism is not an option for the Christian life.” - Luis Palau

In Christ’s final words before he ascended to Heaven, he commanded his followers to share the Good News, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." Matthew 28:19a (ESV). Every believer should be involved in sharing the Good News and making disciples. However, evangelism doesn’t always come easily. Evangelism takes courage and also preparation. The Pocket Testament League offers an array of resources to help you grow in your understanding of the Good News and also be equipped with tools to share the Good News.
