God Remains Sovereign as the Gospel Advances in China

Throughout history, God’s people have trusted Him through changing governments and earthly powers.

“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves… against the LORD and against his Anointed” (Psalm 2:1–2).

Psalm 2 reminds us that while earthly powers may seek to shape the course of history, God remains sovereign over every nation. He is never surprised by the events of our world. This truth gives us confidence as we consider the realities many believers in China face today.

Recent reports point to increasing government oversight of religious life. Pastor Jin Mingri, leader of a prominent house church, was recently released after spending nine months in prison. China’s Ethnic Unity Law has prompted concern from international organizations regarding its potential impact on language, religion, culture, and expression. Government oversight also extends beyond Christianity, including involvement in matters related to the future succession of the Dalai Lama.

These developments remind us that many Christians around the world faithfully follow Jesus in difficult circumstances. Yet they also remind us that the Gospel cannot be restrained.

God continues to build His Church as believers gather for worship, share His Word, and proclaim the hope found in Jesus Christ. Even in places where faith is tested, lives continue to be transformed by the power of the Gospel.

As we reflect on these realities, let us respond with faith, trusting that God is at work and remembering our brothers and sisters in Christ through prayer.
