Genesis 36:43
Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they occupied.

This is the family line of Esau, the father of the Edomites.

As I skim over the names I realize that God has this written in the Bible for a reason. He wasn't just trying to fill space. Names are important. People are important. This section, though I skimmed over it, God didn't. He knew everyone of them. He knows me, my history, my place in the world. He is involved and not just some cosmic force of nature but a real, living Lord of lords Who interacts and is intimately involved in the affairs of people. It gives me comfort to know God is a God of reality and history and cares about the least among us.

Good point, Peter. Way to complex for me to get a handle on.

But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"

Wow. Another horrendous story. What was Jacob thinking when he did nothing but decided to wait for his sons to return from the fields? The brothers had a more righteous response though what should we make of their retaliation?

This really caused a mess, though it should never have been agreed upon, it was done deceitfully but then the covenant was broken by the slaying of the men. Sure puts Jacob in a hard place.

Jacob is a piece of work, one of the hardest people in the bible to understand.

Genesis 29:35
She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "This time I will praise the Lord." So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

Even in the normal routines of life, God is preparing big things - in the life of Leah, who is the mother of Judah from whom the "blood" line of Jesus will come. And in our lives as well if we learn and listen to God's Spirit and Word. Lord, help me this year to hear Your Word, and do it!

There above it stood the Lord, and he said: "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

Genesis 27:4
Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die."

Its kind of hard to understand the customs of the early culture. I wonder if the blessing of the father was like a will, passing down to the next generation the blessings and prosperity to the eldest son. But if received but the younger, just like a will, it becomes binding. And interesting how God honors the decisions and choices we make, even when clouded in deception. Our decisions matter. Our choices are real. That's why we are admonished not to conform to this world, this world's view of how to do things but rather to trust God's Way of truth and grace

Genesis 25:32
"Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?"

Interesting the short sightedness of a quick decision in the midst of a perceived crisis. It's like a warning, be patient, trust the Lord, seek first the Kingdom because God knows I need the life sustaining food. He will provide.

Genesis 24:15
Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.
Peter G.
Peter G. from Timonium, MD said:
God prepares His answer to our prayers before we even ask. But God wants us to ask so we are doubly blessed, once with the gift (the answer) and again with the joyous awareness that God knows us, hears us and loves us.

Genesis 23:6
"Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead."

Again, I already commented on this chapter. What stuck out to me was how the neighboring community recognized the Godly character of Abraham. A challenge and reminder for me that the fruit of the Christian life, among other things, but probably prominent among other things is our character. God says, be holy as I am Holy.
